Henri Marrou, A History of Education in Antiquity

First published in French in 1948, Marrou’s classic study traces Greco-Roman education from its origins in training young Greek warriors through its transformation into a philosophical and secular system, then into early Christian schools and churches of the medieval period.

Boethius, The Consolation of Philosophy

Written around 523–524 CE while Boethius was in prison awaiting execution on a charge of treason, The Consolation of Philosophy blends prose and verse in a searching meditation on suffering, happiness, reason, and virtue. Though Boethius was Christian, the work relies on classical Greco-Roman philosophy rather than explicit Christian teaching, making it a powerful bridge between ancient philosophy and medieval thought. Its humane, universal voice helped make it one of the most influential books of the Middle Ages. For this study group, Boethius offers a vivid example of how logic, rhetoric, music, poetry, and philosophy work together to shape moral understanding, in the face impending mortality.
